So today (I think Saturday, but I’m not really paying attention – vacation mode!) Elliot and I had a full day. We slept in Breckenridge last night because Leadville was full, we choose Breckenridge partially because of the altitude (9,600 ft) and partially because there were some interesting looking trails in the area. In the evening I researched some of the trails and the Wheeler Trail was right by us, and seemed interesting.
We had to be at the TR shuttle at the Denver airport by 1pm so we had limited time. We decided to leave at 7am, and we needed to be back by 9am. We hoped this would give us enough time to make the approx. 14k round trip to the peak and back. We took a few wrong turns on Peak 9 round, and only made it to the tree line, about 300 vertical metres from the pass, but it was a good place to turn around. We ended with 12.5 km on the morning, and some great views.
After this we drove back to Denver (2 hrs) and returned our rental truck then met the transrockies shuttle and headed the 3 hrs drive to Buena Vista. It was interesting to meet some of the other people doing the race for sure, although Elliot and I ended up with the back bench of the 2nd shuttle so we were mainly dozing on our own.
Once we got to Buena Vista I went for a quick run – I have some new shoes I want to break in in case I use them for the race, and I wanted to add some km’s to the day. After the first few km I was really excited to see that I was finally running at a normal pace for the HR I was at – I finished my run at just over 6k, averaging 4:41 pace for 142 HR, which is a massive improvement in pace over what I was doing in Leadville – about a minute per km for the same HR, so that was really exciting! Finally feeling acclimatized!
We went to dinner at a local brewpub and sat with some people from our shuttle, they two were feeling the effects of the altitude of Buena Vista, so that made me even more happy that I was finally feeling better!
